History of Energy Drinks

The History of Energy Drinks: Since the early 20th century, the energy drink industry has been growing in search of a potion to give energy and vitality in a can. Irn-Bru, native to Scotland, was produced in 1901 and is considered to be the first energy drink. Famous for its orange color, it was not marketed as an energy dink in the early century.

In 1929, Lucozade Energy was sold in the UK as a hospital drink to aid in recovery. Brought back in the 80’s, it was sold as a drink to help in replenishing lost energy.

In the 60’s, one of the first new energy drinks marketed to improve performance of athletes was Gatorade. Making energy drink history, it was designed to hydrate the body and increase performance levels of the University of Florida football team, the Gators. They claimed it was specially formulated for this purpose without any of the dangers of energy drinks.

In 1960 Lipovitan was released in Japan. It was sold in small brown glass medicine bottles and had no resemblance to what we know as energy drinks today. Lipovitan first became popular in Asia, long before the energy drink craze reached the US. These potions were designed to help employees work hard way into the night. They contained taurine, one of the main ingredients in energy drinks on the market today. The discovery of ingredients such as taurine, has driven the history of energy drinks to its current success.

In 1985 the US introduced Jolt Cola. The energy drink industry marketed it as caffeine energy drinks. They were promoted as a way to stay awake. It was a hyped-up soft drink full of sugar and caffeine. It quickly became the staple of college campuses and made energy drink history in the US.

In Europe, the energy drink industry was pioneered by the S. Spitz Company, under the product name of Power Horse, the best energy drink of the time. An Austrian entrepreneur and savvy businessman, Dietrich Mateschita, took this product and introduced Red Bull to the European market in 1987. He had the idea to market it to young Europeans. One of the main ingredients in Red Bull is taurine, an amino acid first discovered in the bile of bulls. There is an urban legend behind the name Red Bull, suggesting the taurine in the energy drink is added in the form of bull urine or semen. While taurine is found in these fluids, it is not the source of the ingredients today’s energy drinks. Red bull has been a major force in the history of energy drinks. Even today, Red Bull remains at the top of the energy drink industry.

In 1995, Pepsi launched Josta, the first energy drink introduced by a major US beverage company in the history of energy drinks.

In 1997 Red Bull began distributing in the US, and made a huge impact energy drink industry. It started becoming the cocktail mixer of choice in nightclubs across American soil. The new energy drink swept the nation almost overnight, and is now a household name making its way into movies and American culture.

Since 2002, the energy drink industry has focused its market on the young generation as a way to stay up to get your studies completed or to work late hours. There have been many creative efforts in packaging to get people to buy energy drinks and take advantage of this growing market. They increased the number of servings per container and made concentrated energy shots.

In 2007 the energy drink industry introduced powders and effervescent tablets to be added to water, which made them even more portable and convenient.

Recently, health risks involved with using these high-powered liquids is changing the history of energy drinks. The use of natural energy drinks is starting to be a more a more popular solution. These drinks do not contain the stimulants associated with dangerous energy drinks. They are safe and have healthy ingredients that promote well-being. RevvNRG, is one of the popular alternatives to the controversial conventional brands and was formulated by medical professionals. It is predicted that by 2010 the energy drink industry will reach 10 billion dollars.
